Progress Update – 12 November ‘18

I’ll post regular, weekly updates to chart my progress along with a bigger update such as the one below every month looking at the bigger picture. As a new writer, I find it super helpful to draw a weekly plan and try my best to stick to it but it’s also just as important to not get too downhearted if I can’t stick to it.

The Camp – Novel

Since I started writing (23 July), I decided to take on the advice of multiple writers and start with short stories. Unfortunately, the first short story I started work on ended up being a full length novel.

My story, which I think is a mashing together of my two favourite books (Robert McCammon’s Boy’s Life and Stephen King’s IT) was a blast to write. It’s currently sitting at around 67,000 words and I’m going to let it sit for a while before returning to it. I need to give myself the time and the tools to be able to make a good second draft. My plan is to wait until I, hopefully, have a few short story publications under my belt before feeling good enough to return to it.

Status – Benched, for now.

Dark Days – Short

My short story about depression is currently with an editor. Once I get her thoughts back I’ll work on the next draft before taking the leap and sending out the manuscript for judgement.

Status – Awaiting editor’s thoughts.

Falling – Short

I’m nearing the end of my second draft of Falling, a hard story to explain without spoiling it. I feel more confident about this one and if the editor I’ll send it to agrees, I’ll work it up and hopefully get it sent away to some of the pro markets. And then face constant rejection, probably…

Status – Currently writing second draft.

The Hag – Short

My horror story about Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis, or Old Hag Syndrome, something I suffer from, is sitting awaiting to be picked up again after a slightly awful first draft. I’ve been working together on Falling and The Hag at the same time, which is working well.

Status – Currently writing second draft.

Goals for the next few weeks

  • Perfect, to the best of my ability, Falling before sending it to editor
  • Fix The Hag
  • Decide what other short stories to work on next
  • Continue to read short story publications

This week’s schedule

  • Monday evening – Read
  • Tuesday evening – Write
  • Wednesday evening – Read
  • Thursday evening – Write
  • Friday morning – Write
  • Friday evening – Read
  • Saturday evening – Write
  • All day Sunday – Write

First off I want to say excellent blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if
you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing.
I’ve had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out there.
I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints?
    Thanks!

Thank you Clay, glad you enjoyed it!

That’s a good question and something that varies depending on mood. Since I hardly ever write two days in a row, I find that this helps me to ‘get in the mood’ for writing so that when I can write, it just all flows out of me.

When I struggle with what to write, I’ll take a walk or read something else and then come back. I outline everything so getting into the details before I touch ‘pen to paper’ really helps me.

      Also, coffee!

  2. Hi there, just wanted to mention, I loved this blog post.
It was practical. Keep on posting!
